Issues of informed consent and the reasons why the testing needs to take place and what the test results will be used for are considerations for the psychologist before the testing takes place (Australian Psychological Society [APS], 2004). An important consideration for psychologists is to have a thorough understanding of Aboriginal culture and the various socio-political and economic issues which may impact Aboriginal people (APS, 2004).
Who Should be Testing Aboriginal People?
A psychologist should determine whether they have an appropriate cultural knowledge and if the psychologist feels that they are not the most appropriately qualified individual to undertake the testing then a referral should be made to a more appropriately qualified psychologist (APS, 2004). Further a self-assessment of the psychologist’s personal biases and stereotypes should be undertaken in an attempt to gain awareness of how these issues may affect the administration of testing and provision of psychological services (Paniagua in Musquash & Bova, 2007).
