Jesus had entered Jerusalem to huge public acclaim just a few days earlier, but already the mood had soured and the Jews of the Sanhedrin (the Synagogue Ruling Body) were shouting for him to be crucified instead of Barabas, a convicted insurrectionist.

Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of Jerusalem, had an admiration for Jesus and believed him to be innocent but he was afraid that the factions amongst the Jews would revolt if they weren't appeased. By washing his hands publicly, he declared that he was not responsible for what was about to happen and allowed Jesus to be taken away to be flogged and then crucified.

What Happened in the Hours Before the Crucifixion?

Jesus allowed himself to be taken away and stripped of his clothes. He was flogged, perhaps using the cruel Roman flail tipped with small pieces of metal that would tear the skin. This he allowed himself to undergo meekly and without putting up any sort of struggle.
