Sigmund Freud (1856 – 1939) was an Austrian psychologist who founded the psychoanalytical school of psychology.

A hardened Atheist, Freud is best known for his theories on the unconscious mind, as well as on the defence mechanisms of repression (which he believed were psychological strategies brought into play by various entities to maintain self-image, or to provide a refuge from a situation with which one cannot currently cope).

Freud also created the clinical practice of psychoanalysis for curing psychopathology through dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst.
